How Technological Innovations are Changing Film Industry

Digitization of IFFK using DCP Method (In Nov 2012)

The seventeenth International film festival of Kerala is also on its path to digitization  The specialty of this festival is that 80 out of 198 movies are being exhibited in Digital Cinema Projection (DCP).

How DCP Works ?

In DCP, the movies are preserved in hard disk. Distributors take these disks to the theaters early. After that the information related to the technology of exhibition of the projector is handed over to those concerned. Then it is provided with a secret number called the KDM (Key Delivery Message). When this number is fed into the computer that comes along with the projector, the DCP can be opened and the movie can be exhibited. The KDM number is available only ten or fifteen minutes before the exhibition of the movie. The KDM provided for one show cannot operate any other show or in any other projector. The show has to be exhibited in the time allotted.

In DCP, the film is being portrayed in 2K resolution. i.e. 2048*1080 pixels. To show this, a 2K projector is required. In near future necessary steps are being taken to change it in to 4K (4096*2160).The movie named “Star War Episode One” is the first show in the world that was exhibited in the DCP method in America in December 1999.

Why DCP ?

The DCP method has become more acceptable due to the impossibility of fake versions of movies. If the movies transferred from theaters are caught, it is very easy to find out the place, time, date etc through the secret water mark and thus identify the culprits easily.

The other advantages of DCP method is that it minimizes the extra charge of transferring the film boxes from one place to another and also prevents the damage caused to the film due to age.

Common Problem Faced

  • Costly
  • KDM paswords didn’t work with server linked projectors of theaters resulting in the last minute cancellation of screening.

Kamal Haasan is known to bring much innovation in terms of picturisation and sound quality to his creations. But today Kamal Haasan is going released Viswaroopam on the DTH platform.The celebrated actor is known for thinking ahead of his time and his bold decision to show the film on TV screens through the DTH medium a day before its release in theatres shows that his fire to experiment in new technology. Four DTH operators have signed up with him to show the film;

Barriers

  • Costly to end users
  • Cannot match the experience in theaters
The price of viewing the film at home is Rs 1,000 per connection ,but it is not high when one takes into account the expense incurred by a family of say six to watch a film in a theatre. However, one has to admit that watching a film on the TV screen cannot match the theatre experience. TV screens, however big, are no match for theatres in terms of screen size and sound quality.

Viswaroopam release on DTH arises the analysis of the economics of watching the movie at home as opposed to that in a theatre . If any one is going to watch please provide the updates .

Future of Plastic Currencies in India

Financial Minister P Chidambaram had announced that the plastic copies of Rs.10 are going to come out soon. Reports indicate that the different countries in the world are also going to follow this path.  This decision is going to bring about a great change in the field of notes. The tradition of using paper for making notes by banks for about 300 years is going to be changed.  Only low value notes like 10Rs will come out first. Only later will the high amount notes will be issued. The opinion of the experts in the financial field is that no hurry is required for the issue of plastic notes. In the present situation of increasing fake note issues there is an opinion of using technology to trace notes that would be more advantageous.
